A football-related ceremony idea from a wedding celebrant.

With the world cup starting today, I thought I'd share my No 1. wedding ceremony idea for football fans!

The Ceremony Red Card

A ceremony usually begins with some announcements for your guests. You know the ones...

  • Put your phones away

  • Don't post on socials

  • Put devices on silent... that sort of thing!

Well, if you're a football fan, I have an idea for this part of your ceremony which has been tried and tested by a celebrant (me haha) and some of my lovely couples.

I first came up with this idea when planning my 3rd ever ceremony and it went down a storm!

How it works

It's honestly really simple! For starters, you need a red card.

Your celebrant will then make an announcement at the start of your wedding or vow renewal ceremony. This is usually along the lines of talking about the "match rules", "off-phone rule", "ceremony referee" etc. you can be as creative as you like with it!

Choosing your ceremony referee

Now, your celebrant can be your ceremony referee but, for added fun, you can allocate the card to one of your guests! This could be a best man, your gran or anyone really! They are tasked with "watching over" the ceremony and making sure everyone is staying off their phones etc. Now, obviously, they're not going to spend the whole ceremony spying on everyone - it's just a bit of fun to get the message across!

I sometimes add a sub-clause that if anyone breaks the rules, they will receive a fine and have to buy a shot for everyone in the room!

Let me know if you've tried it!
